Blue Ridge Breakout
Saturday, we went on a family ‘road trip’ to explore Blue Ridge Parkway, check out the camping areas, and enjoy a picnic together. We found the parkway and stopped at a picnic area near a creek to enjoy our lunch. As we started eating, someone asked for a baby bib- only to discover after several trips to the van, that the diaper bags had been left behind. Fortunately we did have baby wipes, and a change of clothes, if needed. But the current diapers were going to have to last waaaayyyyy longer than usual!!
At the end of our lovely, though tense for a few moments, luncheon, we began to load into the van, and there was a pungent smell emanating from my son. His diaper was done. Our day had to be very limited. On our way once again, the children passed around apples and were enjoying the splendid views of the mountains and valleys, when there arose a whimper from the back of the van. Aimee’s stomach was hurting from ‘drinking too much water’. Now, we had only been in the van a short time, so she really had to have chugged a whole 20 oz. of water!! Well, the whimpers turned to whines turned to wails, and as we turned to asses the situation, Aimee’s stomach did indeed empty. Quickly. And caught all the siblings save Nathan. Bill slammed on the brakes, making sure I knew what had just happened, and as soon as the van had stopped, 3 doors flung open, and 6 people were out of that van in no time flat!! The other two were helplessly strapped in- one wanting to join us in the great outdoors, and one blissfully sleeping through it all. We quickly began dousing the children with bottled water, and wiped out the interior of the van with bunches of paper towels. When we had achieved some semblance of cleanliness, we continued on to complete the reconnaissance mission of the day, and return home. For the record, no additional diapers were needed, we saw some spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and we did indeed get to scout out the camping areas. Someday, when we feel very brave, we just may go again!

Re: Blue Ridge Parkway
Don't let the initial adventure deter you from another try (with diaper bag, and with counselling re consumption quantities). My parents and I made it a regular seasonal trip - with water and vienna sausages, sometimes with crackers, usually Cheez-its. I lobbied for Cokes, but to no avail.
Never had quite the sensory adventures you describe, though - possibly because I was the "middle child" of one. - jim
